About Black American Homeschools

Free and low-cost programming for young people is more available in Los Angeles than most families realise. Every school district now receives state funding for free afterschool care. County parks run free drop-in programs. Subsidies can pay for a Y or a Boys & Girls Club. Homeschool charters hand families thousands of dollars a year for lessons.

None of it is explained in one place, and the one channel that would put money directly into a small Black-owned program's hands is nearly empty of them. That gap is why this exists.

What's in this LA program directory

184 programs across LA County, 55 of them Black-led or explicitly built to serve Black young people, plus 55 distinct funding streams mapped to who they pay and what they won't cover.

How we verify programs and funding

Every listing carries the date we last checked it and links to the sources we checked. We re-verify quarterly, because vendor lists churn and districts change operators mid-year. Where a number comes from a third party rather than the organisation itself, we say so on the page rather than presenting it as fact.

We also publish our disagreements. Where two sources conflict — as they do about two of the charter schools — we show both rather than quietly picking one.

What "Black-led" means in this directory

It means there is a stated, checkable basis: the owner says so, the organisation's mission says so, or credible coverage says so. We publish that basis next to every badge. We never infer it from a name, a photograph or a neighbourhood.

135 of our 184 listings have no recorded answer. That is a gap in our research, not a finding about those programs, and nothing on this site should be read as saying otherwise. If one of them is yours, tell us and we'll fix it.
